Friend or foe?
I'm voting FOE.
I think he has irrevocably put himself on Voldemort's side by killing Dumbledore. That doesn't mean he's 100% evil. Obviously, the man has some good in him, enough to garner Dumbledore's trust. He was abused as a child and can deserve some sympathy. He may have been like Draco Malfoy--playing with the dark arts but not really, seriously cut-out for the job. But he enjoyed killing Dumbledore, and in my book, that puts him on the dark side, FOE.
And I'm amazed at how many people, serious HP fans, truly believe Snape is good, or at least not evil/foe material.

My guess is that Snape was in love with Lily, maybe even dated her before James. James was a bully, but maybe he bullied Snape because he knew he was in love with Lily.
Snape would see James and Lily in Harry and would loathe/love him.
That's why Snape dies saving Harry.
I think Snape may have been attracted to Lily, but I doubt he ever dated her. She was, after all, muggle-born, and Snape called her a mudblood, not exactly a term of endearment.
And I would agree that seeing James in Harry would make him Snape dislike Harry, and seeing Lily in Harry's eyes, would give him pause--because Lily did stick up for Severus, and there's got to be some small inkling of appreciation for that, even though Snape dismissed it in the "pensieve" view we've seen.
But I'm in the camp that Snape lives. Nothing so noble as dying to save Harry. Not even the talk that he's made some as-yet-unreported unbreakable vow with Lily (or Dumbledore) to protect Harry convinces me.
But we'll soon know.
16 hours, 38 minutes to go. I can't think of anything else right now.
This is bigger than every christmas put together.
Have you both gotten the book yet? I have, but haven't read it. If I may make a suggestion, I have some questions about the book that you can comment on (they are on my site)! Thanks! POTTERMAINIA!!!!!!!
I've got it and I'm reading it. Now let me alone! (just kidding about that last bit!)
He's a FOE!!! That moron killed Dumbledore for pity's sake! That's good enough for me!
Reading time: 14 hours
P.S. That includes meals, bathroom breaks, and a nap.
Well, I finished in just under 24 hours, and that includes meals, breaks, and sleeping time (because of the midnight release).
But all I can say on the Snape-friend or foe issue is AACK!
I'm writing my book review soon. (Want to re-read, or re-read parts of the book, at least. And think some more, first.)
I just finished reading it (about 2 days, only because my mother was hogging it! She still hasn't finished, though...) All i can say is: OH MY WORD! The book was amazing! So much suspense, though...
Way to leave your mother in the dust, Thoughtful Thespian.
BTW, Anna's ITS indiv. event evaluations include 2 excellents. (That's all I know right now.)
Snape telling Harry to "look at me" was heart wrenching. He wanted to look into the eyes of Lily as he died.
(tear)
Snape-heartwrenching? Aack again!!!
;-)
